PONDERING...Catechism Chat

2 Timothy 2:15  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

It is vitally important for ALL of us to know the Word of God. With that end in mind, we're moving into a new series on Sunday mornings that will take us through the major doctrines of the Bible. To do this...we'll be looking at some catechismic... :D ... items. This raises the following questions.

1. What is a Catechism?
A summary of the teachings of the Bible using questions and answers. Like:
Question: What is the chief end of man?
Answer: A man's chief end is to glorify God, (1Corinthians 10:31) and to enjoy him for ever (Psalm 73:25,26)

2. Why would we want to cover this?
In Sunday School, we've been addressing hard questions for the past couple years. We've looked at the major objections people have to Christianity and discussed the Biblical responses to these questions. Now that we've laid a foundation for the validity of Christianity, I think it is time to systematically look deeper into what exactly the Bible teaches.

Charles Spurgeon once said, "I am persuaded that the use of a good Catechism in all our families will be a great safeguard against the increasing errors of the times..." It is a good way to address the major doctrines in a concise and memorable manner.

3. Aren't there lots of Catechism out there?
Yep.

4. So, what makes one right and another...not?
The Bible. A catechism based on anything other than Scripture is not worthy of attention. The purpose of any good catechism should be to systematically teach Scripture...period.

5. Which one will we be covering?
(Long Laugh...) Like I could ever do something as easy as use just one! :D We're going to look at a combination of two sound catechisms: Spurgeon's and The New City Catechism. BUT, the basis is and must remain The Bible.

6. How long do you think this will take?
(More laughter...)

7. When will we start?
