PONDERING... Keeping the Law

This is part of a catechism study we're doing on Sunday mornings.

Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly?
Since the fall, no mere human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly, but consistently breaks it in thought, word, and deed. All mankind descending from Adam by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first transgression.
  • Romans 3:10-12 ESV - "10 as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.""
  • Ecclesiastes 7:20 ESV - "20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins."
  • Genesis 8:21 ESV - "21 And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done."
  • James 3:8 ESV - "8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison."
  • James 3:2 ESV - "2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body."
  • 1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV - "22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive."
Since the fall,
When we sinned in the garden of Eden--deliberate disobedience.

no mere human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly,
This excludes Jesus, who was fully God and fully man. Likewise, it does not imply that people cannot do some good things. Rather, that our "good" is inconsistent at best, and tainted by sin anyway at worst (as is most often the case).

but consistently breaks it in thought, word, and deed.
We sin inside and out... Always.

All mankind descending from Adam by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first transgression
He was our representative. We fell when he fell. Some may claim that this is unfair. What if we had been in the garden? It might have gone differently. But...it wouldn't have. You might not have sinned the same way...but it would have happened. You are not less sinful than him.

Did God create us unable to keep His law?
No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents,  Adam and Eve (by eating the forbidden fruit), all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law.
  • Genesis 3:7-8 ESV - "7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden."
  • Romans 5:12 ESV - "12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned--"
  • Ecclesiastes 7:29 ESV - "29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes."
No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents,  Adam and Eve (by eating the forbidden fruit),
Sin caused the fall. This was not the original design. This does not negate God's sovereignty in this. Sin did not surprise Him. He knew what He was doing. Sometimes this causes many to question either His power or His goodness. However, not understanding His process does not make it evil or ridiculous.

all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law.
From this point, we have all been born sinners.
