When Will You Be Silent? (Revelation 8:1-5)

VIDEO

When Will You Be Silent? (Revelation 8:1-5)

GIST: In the end, Jesus will leave us speechless, and we’ll see the importance of prayer.

Today, we’re going to walk through the first bit of Revelation 8. It’s here that we’re given the seventh and final seal. If you’ve been with us, you’ll remember, John was shown a sealed scroll (sealed completely with 7 seals) that represented God’s plans and purposes to redeem the world and only the Lamb of God was worthy to open that scroll and execute those plans. Then, John saw Jesus do just that. In the first six seals, we saw the inevitable destruction and rejection that will come until Jesus returns. Then, Jesus paused before giving us the seventh seal to remind us why we can have hope. Chapter 7 gave us a beautiful picture of all the rescued restored and worshiping in Heaven.

Now, two chapters later, we’re coming to that seventh and final seal, and it’s… well, let’s read it.

“1 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. 3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.”

Not what you were expecting? Death, destruction, martyrdom, calamity… a ½ hour of silence? ☺️ It’s easy to read this as anti-climatic. However, we don’t have to look for a fairytale ending. We need to see what this is telling us about Jesus because, well, that’s what this whole book is about! When we do that, it is pretty spectacular. Here’s the gist (and the points we’ll try to walk through together this morning): In the end, Jesus will leave us speechless, and we’ll see the importance of prayer.

I. This Is The End

Not, of course, of our study☺️, but it does seem to point to the end result of human history: God showing up, Jesus’ return. Now, there are interpretations of Revelation that view these images as a chronological progression. That would mean these seven seals were parts of history that happened before the seven trumpets we’re about to see (which are very judgment focused by the way), and the seven bowls we’ll see in a few chapters would come after that. I will never claim superior understanding, but I’ve been advocating for what people much smarter than me call a progressive parallelism approach to these visions, and here’s part of the reason. A few weeks ago, we looked at “earthquake imagery” throughout the rest of the letter. In that, we also saw this repetition of peals of thunder, rumblings, flashing, of lightning…etc. Here it is as a recap.

Language from Revelation

(Revelation 8:5) "5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake." (7th Seal)

(Revelation 11:19) "19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail." (7th Trumpet)

(Revelation 16:18) "18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake." (7th Bowl)

(Revelation 4:5) "5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God," (Throne Of God)

I threw in that last one because it’s the first time we actually see this description in the book, and it literally comes straight from God. Therefore, each of these “sevens” end with the same climax, and when you consider language from the Old Testament, as well, it’s very clear that climax is God showing up!

Language from the OT

Here’s just one example. Right before giving the 10 Commandments, for example, we have this picture: (Exodus 19:16-17) “16 On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.”

Therefore, regardless of how you might look at chronology here, there is no denying the core truth this doesn’t want us to miss, God is showing up, and when He does→

II. He Leaves Us Speechless

Like I said in opening, this ½ hour of silence seems almost out of place in the chaos leading up to it. However, there are at least two points worth mentioning here. First, in a very really way, this is like the→

Calm Before the Storm. Jesus is returning, and He’s coming to judge the world. When Kevin DeYoung preached on this passage, he had several illustrations for this, but I think his best was baby cries. He pointed out what any parents know, the worst cries from a baby usually start with breathless silence. It’s like they’re building up for what’s about to happen! ☺️ I think this is true of this passage. Especially since there will be many who see Him return, and will be immediately filled with dread because they did not want Him to be real.

Nonetheless, I think it’s possible the better example is that of a groom when his bride is seen for the first time. I’ve done a lot of weddings at this point. At the best ones, there is something almost magical when the bride comes down the aisle. The attendees were expecting this moment. Her parents are a mess with emotions. She’s stunning, and no one can look away. But you know who’s no longer chatting with me or goofing around with his groomsmen? The groom. In fact, so often, he doesn’t make a sound at all until he loses it and starts balling. Why? He’s absolutely blown away by her presence and humbled that she’s here for him.

I think that illustrates this silence well. God shows up, and the world is astonished and amazed. And just maybe, starts taking Psalm 46:10 seriously. "10 "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!""

So, we have God showing up and leaving us speechless. Then, in the final verses of this section, we’re reminded→

III. Prayer Is More Important Than You Think

In Revelation 5:8, we’re told: “And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” Then here we’re told, “3b he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel

We’re looking at the end coming here. God is about to show up and finish. And right before He shows us this for the first time, He intentionally gives us this picture of prayers rising up to God—coming to Him as a pleasing aroma. Prayers for what? Well, James tells us "You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions” (James 4:3), but “The intense prayer of the righteous is very powerful”(James 5:16b). And that’s fleshed out all throughout Scripture. Here is just a tiny sampling:

(2 Chronicles 7:14) “14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

(Jeremiah 29:13) "13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."

(John 14:13-14) “13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

(Matthew 7:7) "7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."

I think that’s the message here. People who are seeking God’s face are praying for His coming, are praying for His will, are praying for His provision, are praying for His mercy, are praying for His salvation… and He’s listening. The plain truth is: we don’t do it, not like we should, and we’re missing out.

Let me just make three final observations about this here. First, this is supposed to be→

Pleasing Prayer. That incense was meant to smell good. What’s the point of including it here? Prayer makes God happy. It’s something He desires for us. Which is crazy when you think about it because we’re the ones that get all the benefits! Secondly, this is→

Powerful Prayer. These prayers are connected to God showing up and rescuing the world from sin! Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I guess all I can do now is pray”? Maybe that’s where you are with this too. I’ve been there. However, this mindset springs from vastly misunderstanding the significance and influence of prayer. Consider James 5:16 again: “The intense prayer of the righteous is very powerful” (CSB). Now, before you count yourself out completely, the righteous are those rescued and cleansed by Jesus. They’re covered in His righteousness. These aren’t super saints. They’re saved sinners, like us. But, the prayers being described here aren’t rhyming, mealtime recitations mumbled like half-believed incantations either. These prayers are intense not because they use striking language only a few can truly conjure; but because they’re deliberate, they’re heartfelt, they’re raw… they’re real. And they really make a difference. Do we live like we believe that, can we call this→

Prioritized Prayer? This makes me think of one of the sadder passages from Huckleberry Finn. In it, Huck tells us he gives up on praying. He doesn’t ever ‘see anything come of it’, so he figures it doesn’t work. This reflects how so many of us miss out on the whole point and purpose of prayer. Seek Him and you will find Him. Desire His will, and He will give it. Matthew 5:6 "6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." So again, are we missing out on what God wants to use us to be part of because we don’t take prayer seriously?

Ok, so those notes are a lot longer than I anticipated, so let me just give you two quick→

TAKEAWAYS

And here’s where, hopefully, my title will make a little more sense ☺️.

  1. Talk now

So you’ll be ready to be silent then. Be like the groom who is so in love with the Bride that when he sees her his whole world is overcome with joy. That comes from fostering a relationship with the God who listens now.
